On Monday, I’m sure all hip-hop fans including myself, breathed a sigh of relief as rapper Lil’ Wayne was finally released after spending a week in Cedars-Sinai Hospital for what label exec/friend Birdman told Hot97’s Angie Martinez, was just a case of exhaustion. *side-eye*
After numerous alleged false reports that the 30-year-old New Orleans native was in a coma, being read his last rites, and awaiting his mother’s arrival to make a decision on “pulling the plug” after he suffered multiple seizures…the hip-hop world was spared another tragedy. However, let’s be real here. Would we really have been shocked if the reports had turned out to be true and we’d lost another great young artist?
As we all know, Weezy‘s extensive drug use is no secret. In his 2009 “Behind The Music” documentary the rapper responded to the public’s concern about his use of the drug known as “lean” ( a combination of promethazine and codeine) by stating, “I don’t care if it was heroin in my cup. It’s in MY cup.”
In the 2011 Rolling Stone cover story about Lil’ Wayne, writer Josh Eels wrote, “before he went to jail, Wayne chain-smoked blunts like they were Marlboro Lights. (He purportedly used to take his bus instead of flying, because he didn’t like going that long without getting high.) That was on top of his promethazine-laced cough-syrup habit that left him in a thick perma-haze.”
So needless to say…although the reports of the rapper being near death were allegedly false, they would not have been surprising in the least bit had they turned out to be true.
